In October 2023, the council pledged to make a commitment the people of Newport, through submitting an application to the World Health Organisation (WHO)  to join the global network for Age Friendly Cities and Communities.

Established in 2010, Age Friendly Communities connects cities, communities, and organisations worldwide with the common vision of making their community a great place to grow old in.

The World Health Organisation describes age-friendly communities as being places in which older people, communities, policies, services, settings and structures work together in partnership to support and enable us all to age well.

They identify eight essential features of age-friendly communities, known as the eight domains. These are:

  • Outdoor spaces and buildings
  • Transport
  • Housing
  • Social participation
  • Respect and social inclusion.
  • Civic participation and employment
  • Communication and information
  • Community support and health services

The council is committed to making Newport age-friendly, and becoming a member of the WHO’s global network of Age Friendly Cities and Communities.
