Newport VVP - aerial April 2017

Newport has one of the most significant regeneration programmes in the UK, with investments delivering huge transformation and creating new business opportunities.

International Convention Centre Wales

The £100 million International Convention Centre Wales at the Celtic Manor Resort will bring a £70 million economic benefit and 100,000 bedroom nights to the area every year.

Glan Llyn

To the east of the city, a £1 billion investment is transforming the 600 acre former Llanwern Steelworks site into Glan Llyn, an impressive sustainable community which is set to deliver 4,000 new homes and 6,000 new jobs over the next 20 years.

Friars Walk

On 12 November 2015 the Friars Walk retail and leisure scheme opened, delivered by Queensberry Real Estate with a loan provided by Newport City Council in a bold move that has proved a catalyst for further investment.

Vibrant and Viable Places

Newport City Council was awarded over £17 million by Welsh Government under the Vibrant and Viable Places (VVP) programme which has seen landmark city centre properties transformed into accommodation and commercial space.

The creation of St Paul's Walk was part of the VVP programme.

The schemes have resulted in the creation of some 1,271 jobs, including opportunities for work-based learning and skills development,  and new and improved homes in the city centre.

City Centre Masterplan

Newport's City Centre Masterplan (pdf) was unveiled at the Newport City Summit, 18 January 2018.

Investment focused partnerships such as the Newport Economic Network, Cardiff Capital Region, Great Western Cities and the Cardiff City Deal will also benefit the economy.
