The following information outlines support available for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to decarbonise and enhance their sustainability practices.
Financial support for businesses
Net Zero Newport Decarbonisation Programme
The Net Zero Newport Decarbonisation Programme provides free energy-saving advice and grant funding to help local organisations reduce their energy costs and carbon emissions.
The free advice and match-funded grants up to £30,000 are available to local businesses and community groups with buildings in the Newport area.
The programme is designed to help organisations to:
- establish baseline carbon emissions
- implement emission reduction plans
- actively fund projects aligned with sustainability objectives.
Business Wales – finance locator
All businesses. Simply input business structure, sector, number of employees, location and finance requirement and it sources hundreds of investment opportunities.
UK Business Climate Hub
The webpage is regularly updated with financial UK wide support for businesses.
HSBC Green SME Fund
Available to UK SMEs with an annual turnover of up to £25m. Targeted at SMEs to invest in green solutions. Loans starting at £1,000 up to £25m.
HSBC - Small Business Loan
Small businesses. Long-term fixed rate loans for small businesses of £1,000 - £25,000 over 1-10 years.
Barclays Green Loan
Available for SMEs in the UK for green energy projects. Maximum loan of £5m.
Cardiff Growth Fund
Shared prosperity funding to support businesses. This fund is aimed at businesses with a Cardiff address with less than 250 employees. Grants of £2,500 - £10,000.
Circular Economy Funding
For projects that address the climate and nature emergency. Funded by Welsh Government and delivered by Business Wales. Projects must demonstrate they can deliver outcomes that contribute to sustainability. Programme has an overall budget of £10 million.
Clean Growth Fund
Focused on scaling up SMEs. Uses private sector expertise to identify UK businesses operating in clean growth technology. £20 million in government funding and £20 million from private investors.
Industrial Energy Efficient Accelerator (IEEA)
Part of the BEIS Net zero innovation portfolio which is a £1 billion fund to accelerate low carbon technologies. Loans of £150,000 to £1,000,000.
PRISM
Available for UK steel and metal sector to support decarbonisation and circular economy.
Enterprise Capital Fund – IQ Capital fund
For SMEs to enable them to grow, funding through BEIS (Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy). Aimed at companies in the technology sector (green technology, life sciences). Also, an opportunity to win Green Alley awards. Maximum funds up to £5 million. Maximum loan of £21,500 intended to support start up green economy businesses across Europe
Green Business Loan Scheme
Aimed at Welsh businesses to decarbonise. Eligibility for loan requires adhering to energy and decarbonisation strategies. Loans between £1,000 - £1,500,000.
Dawn Capital Fund
Funding is aimed at SMEs to grow. Focused on industries pioneering in innovative technologies to improve services and products. Equity funding from £100,000 - £5,000,000.
Electric Vehicle (EV) Grant for Staff and Fleet
Aimed at SMEs, you can apply if you are a small-to-medium-sized business with no more than 249 employees. Grant covers up to 75% of costs of installing charger points. Your business can receive 5 grants, up to a maximum of £15,000 each.
Net zero skills programme
The Flexible Skills Programme is a training grant, available to all employers in Wales, that wish to purchase training courses from third party training providers in order for them to meet their business’s upskilling objectives.
"We want to help businesses grow by providing training support to upskill and reskill their workforce in net zero skills. This will enable them to reach future markets and respond to a fast changing economy."

Carbon reduction plan creation and training
The Crown Commercial Service offer free on-line training session for organisations on the creation of a carbon reduction plan.
The training runs every other Thursday at 11.00am.
