Old Bassaleg Bridge pedestrian diversion

Posted on Friday 3rd September 2021

Repairs and structural assessments on Old Bassaleg Bridge are continuing and it will remain closed until engineers confirm it is safe to use.

In the interim, with pupils returning to school next week, an alternative pedestrian route and additional safety measures are being put into place.

Pedestrians will be diverted from Park View along the footway to the controlled pedestrian crossing at Forge Road and onto Bassaleg Road at the Court Crescent junction.

It will be signposted from both directions and monitored with traffic marshalls at peak times.

Pupils walking to Bassaleg School who would normally use Old Bassaleg Bridge should use this safe route and not use the footbridge.

Newport City Council apologises for any inconvenience caused as a result of the temporary diversion made necessary by the unavoidable emergency closure of Old Bassaleg Bridge.
