Book launch for new children's book

A new children’s book ‘Chat with me’ was launched yesterday in Monnow Flying Start.
The Flying Start team in Newport has worked with parents to create the book which follows the exciting adventures of Cas across Newport.
It is not just about reading but making the most of every opportunity to chat with your children. The launch saw children and parents using the books in an interactive way to develop communication and reading skills.
The book offers the opportunity for the learning and development to continue off the pages, encouraging children and parents to extend the conversation outdoors. The book features various landmarks within the city, to encourage the interactive learning experience.
Aneurin Bevan University Health Board specialist speech and language therapists have been an integral part of developing this book and it was a collaboration with Save the Children who funded the project.
Rebecca Thomas, Save the Children Cymru’s executive lead for Bettws Early Learning Community said: “Our work focuses on bringing together local organisations to make sure that children in Bettws are getting the support they need to thrive, learn and grow up in a place they can be proud of.
“Working with others to improve speech and language skills of children during their vital early years, and also supporting the wellbeing of their families in core to what we do, and we are delighted to support this important project to enable children to reach their true potential.”
Peter Carr, director of therapies and health science at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, said: “This was a positive example of how the health board, local authority and the third sector can come together with the community to promote public health messages regarding speech, language, and communication development in the early years.
“It is very encouraging to see how this has been recognised by all involved as crucial in terms of improving long-term outcomes for children.”
Councillor Harvey, Newport City Council’s cabinet member for community wellbeing, also attended the book launch. She said: “This book has given parents and children the opportunity to extend the conversation around the importance of communication through the interactive and recognisable aspects of the book.
“The collaboration with Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and Save the Children Cymru along with the local authority has worked positively to promote the messaging around the importance of communication.”
Printed versions of the book will be provided to families across Newport when their children are 15 months-old, and it will be available in local libraries, playgroups and schools.
