Newport Central Library and Museum works

Posted on Tuesday 30th June 2015

A programme of works to reconfigure and improve Newport Central Library, Museum and Art Gallery in John Frost Square begins this week.

When complete the building will offer a single service point library on the first floor combining the lending and reference provision.

A new reception point is also being created on the first floor serving both the museum and library.

In preparation, the previous reception point on the ground floor closed on Monday.

While the work takes place, every effort will be made to keep disruption to a minimum but there may be a reduced service at times and the council apologises for any inconvenience this may cause.

A second phase of work will focus on the mezzanine level of the lending library which will be enlarged to accommodate the local studies collection.

In the final phase, the lending library will close while a new reception space is created and transfer temporarily to the reference library. A reduced stock of books will be available at this time.

The entrance to the museum on the first floor will also be closed but visitors will still be able to access the museum through the Art Gallery on the third floor.

The foyer area on the third floor will be redecorated and the reference library will be transferred to the first floor.

It is expected that all the works will be completed by 1 October.
