Newport council's new strategic director appointed

Posted on Tuesday 6th June 2017

Newport City Council is pleased to announce that James Harris will be taking over as Strategic Director (People) when the present holder of the post, Mike Nicholson, retires in July.

James is presently the council's chief education officer, a role he has successfully held since 2013.

He joined the authority in April 2006 as head of planning and resources in education and became head of education services in 2011.

Councillor Debbie Wilcox, Leader of Newport City Council, said: "We were very pleased to have a shortlist of first class candidates as that demonstrates that we have a reputation as a good place to work and can attract talented individuals.

"Following a challenging interview process, James's appointment was unanimously approved by a cross party panel. It is fantastic that we have such a high calibre of staff within the council ready to step up when opportunities come up.

"James will work closely with chief executive Will Godfrey and the other strategic director, Beverly Owen, to continue improving the council for the benefit of residents and all the staff. I wish him all the best in his new role.

"I would also like to thank Mike Nicholson for his years of exemplary service in both social services and the wider council and hope he has a very happy retirement."
