Increase in recycling is equal to 310 recycling trucks

Residents are recycling more items than ever before as the latest figures from Newport City Council show - with the increase equivalent to 310 recycling trucks.

The latest data shows the recycling rate has increased to 69.6 per cent in the first quarter of this year compared to 56 per cent for the same time last year.

And the introduction of smaller bins to encourage more people to recycle is being credited for the boost in rates.

While Wales is acknowledged as a world leader in recycling Newport is playing its part in facing the challenges of reducing waste and its impact on our planet.

At the beginning of this year Councillor Roger Jeavons the council’s cabinet member for city services, approved a number of recommendations to increase the recycling rate, including the introduction of smaller bins at the start of April

If this trend continues then the council will exceed its statutory recycling target set by Welsh Government – and save money.

Recent data is very encouraging and highlights that rubbish volumes are reducing by around 30 per cent with recycling and food waste increasing by around 25 per cent.

“This increase in recycling for the first quarter of this year is great news and we would like to thank our residents for embracing the changes brought about by the introduction of the new smaller bins.

“We appreciate there was some resistance to the changes in the beginning but the latest recycling figure of 69.6 per cent show it was the right decision and everyone should be very proud that we are doing our bit to help the environment and reduce waste,” said Cllr Jeavons.

The savings brought about by the introduction of the smaller bins has enabled the council to pay for the Household Waste Recycling Centre to open later on Thursdays and this August Bank Holiday.
