Recycling surveys to help shape council waste strategy

Posted on Tuesday 30th October 2018

Newport City Council is looking at ways to boost its recycling figures to avoid being fined by Welsh Government.

Although recent statistics highlighted that the council recycling rate stands at 60 per cent – which places Newport as the second highest recycling city in the UK – the overall recycling rate in the UK is currently 45 per cent but everyone needs to improve.

As a council we know items which could be recycled are still going into wheelie bins and it costs the council around £1 million to dispose of these items.

The council is currently updating its Waste Strategy and is using this opportunity to carry out a range of surveys to gather the views of residents.

Passengers on local buses can complete a short survey using the bus wi-fi while a more detailed survey will be available to the council’s citizen’s panel.

And a detailed recycling survey will be available on the council’s website via the Have Your Say page.

Councillor Roger Jeavons, Newport City Council’s cabinet member for Streetscene said: “As a council we are very aware of the considerable fines we face if we do not hit the statutory recycling targets.

“And while we are very grateful to our residents who do recycle regularly, we need everyone on board.

“We hope our surveys will give us answers as to why people don’t recycle and hopefully discover if there is anything we as a council can do that will get all involved.”
