Caring for the carers

Posted on Friday 8th June 2018

Newport City Council is holding free events including afternoon tea and an art session to mark Carers Week 2018 next week.

Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of carers, highlight the challenges they face and recognise the contribution they make, not just to families but to communities.

Places at the Newport events will be allocated on a first come, first served basis but can be booked by telephoning 01633 235650 or email [email protected]

Barnardo's is also holding a number of events for young carers and young adult carers during the week.

The council recognises the dedication of the 17,319 carers in the city and a warm welcome awaits them at the events from the carers team. There will be an opportunity to meet other carers for a chat and find out what support is available.

The programme in Newport is as follows:

Monday 11 June - 1pm to 3pm, afternoon tea in the Bellevue Park conservatory and tea rooms. Carers are invited to meet other carers for refreshments and a chat.

Tuesday 12 June - 10.30am to12pm, a social breakfast for carers in The Pot in Newport Arcade, High Street.

Thursday 14 June - 10am to 1.30pm, art session and light lunch in The Riverfront. Carers can enjoy a creative time and no previous experience is needed.

The council's community connectors carers team will be in Central Library in John Frost Square between 10am and 2pm on Friday 15 June offering support, advise, information or just join them for a chat.

Carers Week also sees the launch of new drop in session at Central Library on the second and fourth Friday of the month between 10.30am and 12.30pm.
