What's new for digital Newport?

Posted on Friday 13th July 2018

Newport City Council is working with Pinacl Solutions to develop a range of digital connections across the city.

Super-fast, full fibre connectivity and free public Wi-Fi already benefit those who live, work and visit Newport. The next step is a third layer of connectivity that will create a smart city with an Internet of Things (IoT) network.

Newport City Council's place director, Beverly Owen, explained: "Information technology is one of the most fundamental elements of public sector service delivery. It enables our staff to deliver services in the most efficient and effective way. Our digital strategy has already transformed the services we deliver but this also has a wider implication for the economic future of Newport. We will build on this core to deliver as yet unthought-of advances in technology that will benefit both business and public life in the city."

Councillor David Mayer, the council's cabinet member for community and resources, said: "The pilot work in terms of air quality management, flood defences and refuse collections has already showed the potential of these initiatives. Many other IoT devices, such as smart metering, temperature controls, etc., will help us support our most vulnerable citizens.

"We have seen a real impact already and the enthusiasm and excitement of our IT teams is tangible. The benefits are quite clear in terms of organisational efficiency and delivery of services but we have only scratched the surface. The impact this will have on every aspect of life in the city is immense."
