Temporary home for Ringland library

Posted on Monday 17th December 2018

Ringland library is on the move to a temporary home once work starts on renovating Ringland Community Centre to create a new neighbourhood hub.

The library will close on December 22 and re-open at a temporary location at Unit 7 in Ringland shopping centre on January 2, 2019.

Newport City Council made the decision to move the library service as it would be impractical for the library to stay in its present location while the building works went ahead.

As the unit is smaller than the present library building this means there will be fewer books on display however those available will be new stock and more popular titles will be available.

Library members will still be able to request titles from any of the other council libraries and these will be delivered as normal to the temporary library.

The smaller site also means the availability of PCs will be reduced and some regular events and activities may be affected however the Open Zones which support employment skills, reading groups and storytime sessions for younger children should not be affected.

Councillor Deb Harvey, the council’s cabinet member for Culture and Leisure, said she hoped residents would understand why the move had to take place.

“The council was determined to have a library service continue for residents in Ringland which is why we have moved the service temporarily to Unit 7 in the shopping precinct.

“Once the work is complete a new library will be a vital part of the service to be provided in the new hub.

“We hope residents understand the need for this move and bear with us through these temporary arrangements,” said Cllr Harvey.
