Newport City Council is marking  Commonwealth Day with a flag raising service on Monday, 13 March.

The ceremony will take place at Newport Civic Centre, at 10am, when the Mayor’s Chaplain Mr Graham Lynch will officiate.

During the service the Mayor of Newport, Councillor David Atwell, will read a message from the Secretary General of the Commonwealth, the Right Honourable Patricia Scotland, QC, while the deputy Lord Lieutenant for Gwent, Murray Kerr, will read out the Commonwealth Affirmation.

Invited guests include the High Sheriff of Gwent, members of the Armed Forces, AMs and MPs, however, the service is also open to members of the public who would like to attend and show their support for the Commonwealth.

The ceremony in Newport is one of more than 850 where flags will be raised around the globe in a shared celebration of this amazing family of nations.

As well as the special flag raising service, there are a host of events taking place across the Commonwealth, and for the first time this year young members of the United Kingdom Army Cadet Force (ACF) will be taking the Commonwealth flag to the top of the highest peaks in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Army Cadets will also be raising the flag at 53 other locations throughout the UK as part of the international initiative.
