Prospective council candidates meeting

Posted on Thursday 16th February 2017

Newport City Council’s Returning Officer Will Godfrey is holding a meeting for prospective council candidates at the Civic Centre at 5.30pm on Wednesday 22 February.

On Thursday 4 May, residents will go to the polls to elect 50 councillors to represent them on 20 wards across the city.

Mr Godfrey said: “The meeting on 22 February will be an opportunity for people considering standing for election to find out more about how the council works, the role of a councillor and how it fits in with the organisation.

“Representing your community brings responsibilities and challenges but support, advice and training is available for all members. We will be able to answer your questions and provide further information about the election process at the meeting.”

To become a local councillor you need to be at least 18 years old and a British, Commonwealth, Irish or European Union citizen. There are certain requirements to be met but you do not have to be a member of a political party.

Nomination forms will be available on the council website from 1 March and must be submitted by 4pm on 4 April.

More information on the May elections and how to become a councillor can be found at www.newport.gov.uk/elections.

Regular updates on important dates in the run-up to the elections will be made available through various channels including Newport Matters, the council website, Facebook and Twitter #newportdecides
