Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)

Financial assistance for further education students aged 16 to 18 years

Students living in Newport, undertaking further education study in schools, sixth forms or colleges and aged 16 to 18 should apply to either their school or college for a means-tested EMA (Education Maintenance Allowance).

Application forms are available from the school or college.

The EMA is means-tested against parental income, assessed by the Student Loan Company and, if eligible, payments are made direct into the student’s bank account.

ALG (Assembly Learning Grant)

Financial assistance for full and part-time further education students aged 19 years and over

Students living in Newport, aged 19 years or over and attending full-time or part-time further education courses at college or university, should apply for a means-tested ALG (Assembly Learning Grant).

Application forms are available from the student’s college or university.

The ALG is means-tested against parental income, assessed by the Student Loan Company and, if eligible, payments are made direct into the student’s bank account via the Student Loan Company.

How much you get depends on your household income and will be calculated when you make your application.
