Planning
Gypsy and Traveller Sites in Newport
Why?
Under the Housing Act 2004 (opens new website) and through the Local Development Plan, Newport City Council has a duty to identify suitable residential and transit sites for gypsies and travellers, if a need is demonstrated.
The council is finalising its Local Development Plan which the Welsh Government will not approve unless it includes a sufficient and deliverable number of gypsy and traveller sites.
Identification of sites will help the council tackle the issue of unauthorised encampments and reduce the bill for evictions as well as the cost of clearing up afterwards.
There are examples around the country where councils have dramatically reduced expenditure on unauthorised encampments through the provision of authorised and well managed sites.
The provision of authorised and well managed sites is a better solution for everyone.
