A New Record

Alex Greenfield of Maindee Flyers Cycling Club, age 13 and Katie Curtis of Cardiff Ajax Cycling Club, age 15 created a new cycling record at the Velodrome on 10 June 2004. Participating in the British 5 Kms Standing Start Ladies Tandem event, the girls finished in a record time of 7 minutes 04.424 seconds. Newport City Council’s track officer Courtney Rowe supported both the girls in their attempt.

The girls have raced in Welsh and British internationals and both have won numerous British titles.

Katie has been selected for the youth Commonwealth games in Australia later this year. She will be going as a track endurance rider and is training and racing twice a week at the Velodrome.

The record attempt is unique, as the previous records have been held by women at least 18yrs of age. There was a full night of racing to compliment the record attempt.
