The Civil Contingencies Unit provides the emergency planning and business continuity support services for Newport City Council and maintains a 24 hour, 365 days a year duty officer system to respond to exceptional situations.

The Unit actively supports the emergency services and works closely with neighbouring local authorities and other organisations to ensure co-ordinated planning and response to potential major emergencies.

The Unit also produces plans and provides staff training and exercising to test these.
