Documenting the City: Art and Society in Newport
This exhibition celebrated Newport's coming of age as a City was on show in the Art Gallery from 12/05/2007 until 07/07/2007.
Featuring over a hundred paintings, drawings and prints from the gallery’s permanent collection, the exhibition explored the visual representation of Newport from the late eighteenth century to the present day.
Documenting the City provided a unique perspective upon the making of modern Newport. It traced the evolution of the modern city from the turbulent origins of the industrial frontier and Chartism, through the changes and challenges of the twentieth century, to the current prospects of the new entrepreneurial City of Newport.
The following websites were created to explore art and society in Newport. They document a series of art projects relating to the city and will give visitors to these sites the chance to make their own contribution.
