Welsh is the main language for all subjects and activities in Welsh-medium schools.
All teaching and assessment, except English as a subject, is in Welsh at all key stages.
The aim is to ensure all children can speak, read and write in both Welsh and English to a high standard.
Early years
Here are some examples of Welsh-medium early years childcare and education across Newport:
- Early Education
- Flying Start
- Cylch Ti a Fi (baby and toddler groups)
- Cylchoedd Meithrin (playgroups)
Find out more information on our Newport Family Information Service web page.
Schools
Welsh is taught by encouraging children to listen, learn, speak, and use a range of activities to develop their bilingual skills.
English language skills are introduced at Key Stage 2 (age 7).
Some parents choose Welsh-medium education for their children later in their school lives. To help the move from English-medium to Welsh-medium, we offer dedicated Welsh-language provisions for all ages.
We offer this support in both primary and secondary schools.
Our Welsh-medium primary schools are:
- Ysgol Gymraeg Casnewydd
- Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Teyrnon
- Ysgol Gymraeg Ifor Hael
- Ysgol Gymraeg Nant Gwenlli
Our Welsh-medium secondary school is Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed.
For more information on the Welsh-language provisions we provide, visit our changing to a Welsh-medium school page.
Post-16 and adult education
Coleg Gwent offers opportunities to study Welsh as a second language for students and adults.
A number of courses for study in Welsh are also available through The University of South Wales.
