60 big ideas for Newport
60 ideas have been developed from suggestions made by residents.
Some are transformational, some are smaller ideas to make the everyday better.
At the moment they are just ideas, but some of these may become council-owned projects included in the placemaking plan. Others could be progressed by the community, business owners, public sector and investors.
Share your thoughts on the 60 big ideas or submit a new suggestion in the online survey.
You can also find out more on our placemaking webpage.
Budget 2025/26
Work is underway to set a balanced budget for the council in 2025/26.
A report featuring initial saving proposals was considered by cabinet on Wednesday 13 November 2024.
Cabinet and full council considered the future financial position in February 2024 when it was estimated the gap for 2025/26 could be as much as £20 million.
The UK Autumn Statement, announced late October, confirmed additional funding for Wales. However, the impact on Newport and our full financial position will not be known until we have details of the Welsh government grant settlement which is expected in December.
A further report and additional savings proposals will be considered by cabinet in January 2025 when there is more certainty around Newport’s full financial position.
Closing date – 15 December
Community orchards
The council has been awarded money from Welsh government to improve biodiversity and provide natural community spaces in Newport. One of these projects is to install community orchards.
The council’s biodiversity team has identified three sites across Newport suitable for a community orchard.
These are:
- High Cross open space (behind the Rising Sun public house)
- Mill Heath, Bettws
- Dunstable Road, Ringland
If you live in one of these areas we would love to hear from you.
Closing date - 14 January 2025
Parks and play improvements
The parks team are aiming to improve play areas in Newport. The project has secured funding from the 2022 budget consultations to upgrade play areas to provide children with safe and fun spaces to play.
The project is being undertaken with the input of the community, ensuring that the needs and preferences of local families are considered in the design process through multiple consultations.
