Local councillors are elected by the community to decide how the council should carry out its activities. Councillors are not paid a salary for their work, but they do receive allowances.
Following the local elections May 2022, there are 51 councillors:
- 34 from the Labour Party
- seven Conservatives
- four from the Lliswerry Independent group
- three from the Newport Independent Party
- one Liberal Democrat
- one from the Green Party
- one Independent
Surgeries provide opportunities for residents to talk to their councillor face to face. Contact can also be made through council and telephone meetings.

The Leader
The Leader of the council is elected annually by the majority group of council members and includes the role of Chair of Cabinet.
The current leader of Newport City Council is Councillor Dimitri Batrouni.
