Green Sector Careers Week

Green jobs the focus of Newport schools careers week

Posted March 2022

Secondary school pupils in Newport will have the opportunity to learn about green jobs and the environmental sector next week as part of an online careers week.

The event, which runs from the 21st-25th March and is organised by Careers Wales and the One Newport partnership, aims to make young people aware of the types of jobs that are available in developing sectors such as

    • green transport
    • energy
    • environment and conservation
    • carbon neutral construction
    • green manufacturing

Pupils will get the opportunity to find out what it's like to work in the sector and will get an insight into the range of job opportunities available in the local area.

The material delivered during the week will remain available to students after the event to help them consider career choices and pathways.

Speaking about the event, Councillor Jason Hughes, cabinet member for sustainable development at Newport City Council, said

“The green agenda is high on the council’s list of priorities, so I’m pleased that we’re working with Careers Wales and partners to deliver this timely event.

“We want to showcase to our pupils that there are jobs in the green economy available to them on their doorstep, as well as underline how important the sector will be to the future of the city.

“One of the key themes of our recently launched organisational climate change plan is the wider role the council plays in building a greener Newport. Organising events such as this demonstrate our commitment to theme, and hopefully inspires the leaders of the future to consider a career in the green economy.”

Mikki Down, operational and development manager at Careers Wales, said:

“As businesses in Newport develop their commitments and actions to achieve climate and sustainability goals, the demand for talent with green jobs and skills in the area is only going to increase.

"Events such as this are vital to help inform young people about the potential career paths available to them in the green economy - now, as well as in the future"
