Splashing out for Mayor’s charities

In a fine example of cross-party working, Councillor Dimitri Batrouni and Councillor Matthew Evans are planning to make a big splash together this month.

Respectively the leader and opposition leader on Newport City Council, they are taking the plunge in aid of a good cause.

The councillors want to raise money for the charities being supported by the Mayor of Newport by getting soaked by the bucket feature in Tredegar Park’s new Splash ‘Port.

Councillor Ray Mogford is this year’s mayor, and his appeal will benefit children’s centre Sparkle and the voluntary group SARA (Severn Area Rescue Association).

Councillor Batrouni said: “These are two great, local charities that do such much good work in different ways. If you want to see two politicians getting a drenching, then pledge your support by sending a donation to one or both of the charities.”

Councillor Evans added: “We may be from different political parties but we are united in wanting to support the Mayor’s charities and the opening of the new water play zone presented a great opportunity for an unusual fundraising opportunity.”

Both councillors are urging people to show their support if they can by making a donation to the mayor’s charities for 2024. Details of how to do this can be found on the charities’ websites:

If possible, please explain that you are “Splashing out for the Mayor of Newport’s Charity Appeal”.

And if you want to go and watch the two politicians go under the big bucket, then keep an eye out for further details of when it will happen – when there will also be some little buckets available to take donations as well.
