New Tredegar Park facilities add a splash of fun to the summer

Splash ‘Port, Newport’s new water play zone, and an upgraded children’s play area were opened this afternoon by the leader of the council, Councillor Dimitri Batrouni.

The public opening was well attended, and the new facilities have already been well received by those who were among the first to try them out earlier today.

Speaking after the launch event, Councillor Batrouni said: “It was great to see so many people joining us this afternoon to open the new facilities, which look fantastic!”

“When we asked residents what improvements they wanted to see in the park, it was clear that both a new water play zone and an upgraded play area were popular choices.

“I have no doubt therefore that the new facilities will be very busy over the rest of the summer and beyond!”

Splash ‘Port has 26 different water sprinkler features and a massive water tipping bucket.

Splash ‘Port’s opening hours are 10am-5pm, from 1 April to 30 September each year.

It will not be open during periods of very bad weather, such as heavy rain or thunderstorms, so please check the forecast before you set off for the park.

Relaxed sessions for children with additional needs will be available every day from Monday to Friday, starting from this Monday (12 August).

These will be from 10am-11am during the school holidays, and 11am-12pm during term time.

New changing facilities for Splash ‘Port are available in the existing changing room and toilet block

The upgraded play area has a range of brand-new play equipment, including multiple sets of swings, interactive boards, net climbs, multi-play frames and fully accessible roundabouts.

There is also a sand play area with a small climbing frame and digger tools, as well as a new play zone for toddlers and a new picnic area.

The play area has also been fully resurfaced to deal with the unpredictable Welsh weather.

The new facilities are the first in a series of planned improvements at Tredegar Park, which also includes work to increase car parking space and the conversion of the old lodge into a new café facility.

Work on a new path and ramp access from Splash ‘Port to the changing room block will also start later this year.

Councillor Yvonne Forsey, cabinet member for climate change and biodiversity, said: “These upgrades are just the first steps in our plan to transform Tredegar Park.

“We were delighted to get so much positive engagement when we asked residents what improvements they wanted to see made to the park.

“We’re delivering on that feedback and creating a park that we hope the whole of Newport will be proud of!”
