As the first Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic council Leader in Wales, Councillor Batrouni succeeds former Leader, Councillor Jane Mudd, who has stepped down following her election to Police Crime Commissioner for Gwent.

“I’ve been elected to the best job in Wales” said Councillor Batrouni after the council meeting.

“Representing the people of Newport is a privilege, and that is something I will never take for granted.

“I understand that the expectations of our residents are high – we must strive to meet them, despite the continuing pressure on all council budgets.”

A ward councillor for Gaer since 2022, Councillor Batrouni has served as cabinet member for organisational transformation.

Councillor Batrouni added: “Newport has bags of potential. With its many economic and cultural assets, Newport’s offer is unrivalled in Wales, and I truly believe we can make Newport the best place to live, work and play.

“I do understand however, that the council cannot and should not work alone in achieving this aspiration.

“We will need our business partners, voluntary organisations, our wealth of brilliant community groups and residents to work with us to change the city.

“It won’t be easy, but nothing worth doing in life is easy.

“Jane is going to be a hard act to follow but she has left a legacy and a foundation that I and other future leaders can build upon.”
