If you are homeless or at risk of losing your home, the council has a duty under the Housing (Wales) Act 2014 to find out if we can help you.

Newport Central Library, John Frost Square operates an in-person service for people who are homeless or those at risk of homelessness.

The drop-in service is available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday between 9am-1pm and 2pm-4pm and Wednesday 9am-1pm.

If we are already supporting you as homeless or at risk of homelessness, please contact your case officer directly by email or phone.

Email [email protected] or telephone (01633) 656656 (out of hours service available).

Our partners provide support for those found to be sleeping rough in Newport and for rough sleepers in accommodation.

Our housing team works with:

  • The Housing Support Grant team (formerly Supporting People)
  • Pobl’s Housing First
  • Wallich
  • Eden Gate
  • Salvation Army

They provide advice about:

  • accommodation
  • food
  • household items
  • toiletries
  • clothes

The council will try to find you somewhere to stay on a temporary basis while you work with the council to find a solution.

If temporary accommodation is provided, you may be asked to leave if you have:

  • breached the terms of your agreement
  • refused suitable accommodation (including private rented)
  • made yourself intentionally homeless
  • not done everything your caseworker has asked

The council will help you find accommodation for up to 56 days after you have become homeless.

Working with your caseworker to agree reasonable steps and support getting accommodation.

Such as:

  • private accommodation
  • accommodation you have found yourself
  • social housing

The council will work with you to take all reasonable steps to prevent homelessness, either by working to keep your existing home or by finding alternative accommodation.

If the council is unable to house you and everything we have asked has been done, we will decide if we have a duty to help you.

If you have refused suitable accommodation (including private), or have not followed agreed actions you may not get further help.

If you have followed actions and still homeless, we will assess if you are in one of the priority groups, and if your homelessness was intentional.

At the end of the 56 days, if you are in one of the priority need groups and are not homeless intentionally, we will continue to help you find a new home.
