Empty homes strategy

The council's empty homes strategy aims to find out why homes in Newport are left empty. It also works to help owners bring them back into occupation.

To minimise the impact of empty homes and meet rising housing needs, the council works with:

  • home owners
  • partner agencies
  • local residents

Reporting issues

Report a concern

Homes that are left empty for a long time tend to deteriorate. Long-term empty homes can also cause problems for neighbours and the local community. Empty or generally neglected homes can attract vandalism or crime.

If issues arise, the council has statutory powers to act if there is a real need to do so. The owner will be asked to fix the problem first unless it is an emergency.

You can also report any dwelling which you believe may be a risk to the public as a dangerous structure.

Visit our housing nuisance webpage to report concerns about:

  • pests and rodents
  • overgrown gardens or accumulations
  • defective drainage
  • damp issues caused by an empty home
  • open to trespass issues
