A temporary exhibition showing a collection of ink and pencil sketches attributed to JMW Turner (1775-1851).
The sketches relate to places in Europe including modern-day Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands. JMW Turner visited the European continent on numerous occasions throughout his life. He filled hundreds of sketchbooks on his travels with architectural studies, landscape views and notes relating to local costume and tradition.
Turner did not always travel alone. He was sometimes accompanied by his sponsors, other artists or students. Some doubt therefore remains whether all of the sketches in this collection originate from Turner's hand.
