Covid 19: In line with Welsh Government regulations, Newport Museum and Art Gallery will be closed and all bookings suspended from Friday, 4 December, 6pm.
Tuesday: 10.00am - 12.30pm, 1pm - 4pm (Museum only)
Wednesday: 10.00am - 12.30pm, 1pm - 4pm (Art Gallery only)
Thursday: 10.00am - 12.30pm, 1pm - 4pm (Museum only)
Friday: 10.00am - 12.30pm, 1pm - 4pm (Art Gallery only)
Closed on bank holidays.

COVID 19 restrictions
Due to Covid 19, reduced opening hours apply and visits are limited to 30 minute timeslots. Booking is essential and you will only be admitted during your timeslot.
One household (4 people) can be admitted per booking.
If your household is larger, please book more slots at the same time and you will be let in together.
If you would like to spend more than 30 minutes in the Museum or Art Gallery, please book a number of consecutive time slots (for example, book two consecutive time slots for a one hour visit).
It is compulsory for people over 11 years to wear a face covering in public indoor spaces, which includes the Museum and Art Gallery.
There are exemptions for people who cannot wear face coverings for health or medical reasons.
You will be asked for your name and contact details when you book your visit.
In the event that the COVID 19 contact tracing process is initiated we will make your details available to the NHS Wales Test, Trace, Protect service.
Following Welsh Government guidance, some temporary changes to our services have been made:
- *Toilet and baby changing facilities are available to visitors to the Museum and Art Gallery on request.
*Interactive displays and children activities are unavailable.
*Public seating within the Museum and Art Gallery has been removed.
*A one-way system is in operation throughout the Museum.
*Refreshment facilities on the premises are currently unavailable.
*Lift access to the Museum mezzanine is currently not possible.
Please adhere to social distancing throughout your visit and sanitise your hands before and after entering the building. Do not visit if you have any of the Covid 19 symptoms.

How to find us
Newport can be reached easily via the M4. Car parking around Newport Museum and Art Gallery is limited, inside museum opening hours the Kingsway Centre car park is the nearest parking option.
Directions to the car park are signposted on all major routes around Newport.

From the train station (city centre exit) turn left at the exit and walk past the taxi rank.
Cross the road and follow the pedestrianised route to the main shopping thoroughfare, Commercial Street.
Walking up the street turn down Llanarth Street into John Frost Square.
The Museum and Art Gallery is immediately on your right (located in the same building as the library).
From Newport Market bus station walk alongside Newport Market to High Street.
Turn left into High Street and continue along the pedestrianised Commercial Street.
Turn left down Llanarth Street into John Frost Square. Newport Museum and Art Gallery shares a building with Newport Central Library and is located immediately on your right as you enter the square.
From the Friars Walk bus station, walk through the shopping complex. You find the Museum in the opposite corner of John Frost Square when you emerge from the covered walkway.

The Museum and Art Gallery displays tell the story of Newport from earliest prehistoric times to 1900s. Of particular interest are the Roman and Chartist collections.

Our access commitment to you…
- Newport Museum and Art Gallery welcomes everyone, it is free to visit and to attend talks and special events.
- The museum is on floor 1 and the mezzanine balcony with lift access, please ask a member of staff for help.
- The art gallery is on floor 3 with lift access.
- Assistance dogs are welcome and water can be provided for your dog.
- Accessible toilets are on floor 1.
- There are drinks and snacks vending machines on floor 3.
- There is an emergency wheelchair charger point on the ground floor next to the entrance.
- Wheelchairs can be borrowed for use around the museum and art gallery.
Entrance to the building is on the flat, at the same level as John Frost Square. There are automatic doors to the building which is shared with the library. A staffed information desk is located on the 1st floor.
There are 31 steps with one turn to floor 1 and another 43 steps with three turns to floor 3.
Within the museum there are two staircases to the mezzanine balcony. Each has 19 steps with one turn. These stairs have open risers.
The museum has an open entrance.
The doors to the art gallery on floor 3 open outwards onto the foyer.
There are chairs with arm rests throughout the museum and art gallery.
Lighting levels in the museum are lower than normal because many of the objects on display are sensitive to light. Please speak to a member of staff if this is a problem for you.
There is one permanent audio visual in the museum. It is located in the Chartist display at the back of the museum.
Alarms have voice instructions. Staff will help visitors who require support to leave the building. Staff are also trained to use evac chairs.
Getting to and from Newport Museum and Art Gallery
Unfortunately there is no direct vehicular access to the front of the building.
The nearest car park is in the Kingsway Shopping Centre car park. Once parked it is a short walk (approx 400m) from the car park to the museum entrance (all on the same level).

Trains - Newport Station is situated on Queensway and is approximately 10 minutes walk.
