Newport Museum and Art Gallery Introduction Tours

Join our Front of House Team for introductory tours to the Museum and Art Gallery. Get an overview of our displays and discover some of the highlights. Tours are delivered in English and last approximately 20 minutes. They take place on Fridays at 11am and on Saturdays at 11am and 2.30pm and start from the Museum & Library Information desk on floor 1.

Introductory tours are also available in Welsh and can be booked for groups in advance. Please e-mail [email protected] to enquire.

Facilities

Limited seating is available in gallery areas. 

Lift access to all floors. For lift access to the Museum Mezzanine, please see staff at the Information Desk on the first floor.  

Public toilets are located on the third floor. 

The accessible toilet is situated on the first floor.

Baby changing facilities are available on the first floor. 

How to find us

Car

Newport can be reached easily via the M4. Car parking around Newport Museum and Art Gallery is limited, inside museum opening hours the Kingsway Centre car park is the nearest parking option.

Directions to the car park are signposted on all major routes around Newport.

Train

From the train station (city centre exit) turn left at the exit and walk past the taxi rank.

Cross the road and follow the pedestrianised route to the main shopping thoroughfare, Commercial Street.

Walking up the street turn down Llanarth Street into John Frost Square.

The Museum and Art Gallery is immediately on your right (located in the same building as the library).

Bus

From Newport Market bus station walk alongside Newport Market to High Street.

Turn left into High Street and continue along the pedestrianised Commercial Street.

Turn left down Llanarth Street into John Frost Square. Newport Museum and Art Gallery shares a building with Newport Central Library and is located immediately on your right as you enter the square. 

From the Friars Walk bus station, walk through the shopping complex. You find the Museum in the opposite corner of John Frost Square when you emerge from the covered walkway.

We welcome everyone and have a range of services designed to make your visit more enjoyable.

The Museum and Art Gallery displays tell the story of Newport from earliest prehistoric times to 1900s. Of particular interest are the Roman and Chartist collections.

Our access commitment to you…

  • Newport Museum and Art Gallery welcomes everyone, it is free to visit and to attend talks and special events.
  • The museum is on floor 1 and the mezzanine balcony with lift access, please ask a member of staff for help.
  • The art gallery is on floor 3 with lift access. 
  • Assistance dogs are welcome and water can be provided for your dog.
  • Accessible toilets are on floors 1 and 2.

Building access

Entrance to the building is on the flat, at the same level as John Frost Square. There are automatic doors to the building which is shared with the library. A staffed information desk is located on the 1st floor.

There are 31 steps with one turn to floor 1 and another 43 steps with three turns to floor 3.

Within the museum there are two staircases to the mezzanine balcony. Each has 19 steps with one turn. These stairs have open risers.

The museum has an open entrance. 

The doors to the art gallery on floor 3 open outwards onto the foyer.

There are chairs with arm rests throughout the museum and art gallery.

Lighting levels in the museum are lower than normal because many of the objects on display are sensitive to light. Please speak to a member of staff if this is a problem for you.

There is one permanent audio visual in the museum. It is located in the Chartist display at the back of the museum.  

Emergency evacuation

Alarms are indicated by sound. Staff will help visitors who require support to leave the building. 

Getting to and from Newport Museum and Art Gallery

Unfortunately there is no direct vehicular access to the front of the building.

The nearest car park is in the Kingsway Shopping Centre car park. Once parked it is a short walk (approx 400m) from the car park to the museum entrance (all on the same level).

Trains - Newport Station is situated on Queensway and is approximately 10 minutes walk.
