Nappy and hygiene waste

We collect a range of items as part of our free nappy and hygiene waste collections service, which includes nappies, nappy bags, wipes and cotton wool, as well as incontinence products.

We also collect empty colostomy bags, non-infectious stoma bags, and catheters, as part of this service.

We collect this waste every two weeks from homes that are registered for this service.

To request this service, you must:

  • have children under the age of three living in the same house, or
  • have a health condition that causes you to use one of the items listed above, and
  • use all the recycling services available to you.

Please note: you can’t use this service for other types of hygiene waste, such as feminine hygiene waste. Please double-bag these items then put them in your bin for non-recyclable waste.

If you’d like to dispose of these items more frequently than every three weeks, please take them to the household waste recycling centre on Docks Way in Maesglas, free of charge.

Swapping single-use nappies for reusable nappies

Did you know the average baby uses 5,000 nappies, which costs around £1,500? And did you know that, in Wales, almost 300 million nappies are thrown away each year?

Reusable cloth nappies offer an environmentally friendly alternative to single-use nappies. These items are comfortable, can save you money, are easy to use, and reduce the amount of waste you produce.

If you’re interested in trying out washable nappies Newport has a Cloth Nappy Library offering advice and tips on using reusable nappies. For a small fee you can hire a set of cloth nappies to trial for a month.
