Community litter picks

If you would like to join the many volunteers who give their time to help keep Newport's communities clean and litter-free, please follow the steps below.

You can borrow litter pickers, hoops, hi-vis vests and bin bags from Newport's Keep Wales Tidy hub and we will take away the bags of litter that you collect.

Step 1: Set up a personal account on My Newport and tell us about your planned litter pick - we will then give you a reference number.

Before carrying out a litter pick, you must complete a risk assessment form and keep for your own records. You can use our Risk Assessment Template (doc) if you wish.

Step 2: Only pick litter from pavements, verges and adjoining public land

Step 3: Keep safe during the litter pick, maintain social distancing and please do not pick up hazardous waste such as hypodermic needles, chemicals, asbestos, broken glass, waste collected from rivers. Email us at [email protected] so that we can collect this safely. Please do not move or collect any fly tipping, instead please report here

Step 4: Sort any recyclable materials into separate bags, e.g. cans, plastics, glass bottles, paper and cardboard.

Step 5: Leave the collected bags safely and tidily, grouped together outside your home, near a litter bin or a road or path that we can easily access. Please do no leave on roads with speed limits above 30 mph.

Step 6: We will collect the litter you have collected and take it to be recycled or disposed of safely. Please note only a maximum of 10 bags can be collected. If you think you will have more than 10 bags please provide us with one weeks' notice via email [email protected].
