Community litter picks

COVID-19 update 19 October: in line with Welsh Government rules, volunteer litter collections will be suspended from Friday 23 October 2020.

If you would like to join the many volunteers who give their time to help keep Newport's communities clean and litter-free, please follow the steps below.

You can borrow litter pickers, hoops, hi-vis vests and bin bags from Newport's Keep Wales Tidy hub and we will take away the bags of litter that you collect.

Please note: Due to COVID-19 restrictions our hubs are currently closed and any litter picking kit will be delivered with stickers.

Step 1: Set up a personal account on My Newport and tell us about your planned litter pick - we will then give you a reference number and stickers to be placed on the bin bags.

Before carrying out a litter pick, you must complete a risk assessment form and keep for your own records. You can use our Risk Assessment Template (doc) if you wish.

Step 2: only pick litter from pavements, verges and adjoining public land

Step 3: Keep safe during the litter pick, maintain social distancing and please do not pick up hazardous waste such as hypodermic needles, chemicals, asbestos, broken glass, waste collected from rivers. Email us at info@newport.gov.uk so that we can collect this safely.

Step 4: Sort any recyclable materials into separate bags, e.g. cans, plastics, glass bottles, paper and cardboard.

Step 5: Put the stickers with your reference number on the bags, and leave the collected bags safely and tidily, grouped together as far as possible near to a road or path that we can easily access.

Step 6: we will collect the litter you have collected and take it to be recycled or disposed of safely
