House and car alarms

Car alarms

If you are being disturbed by a car alarm sounding over a long period of time, try to find and speak with the person responsible for the vehicle.

If you can't find the person and feel that the alarm is having a significant impact on you, report the noise to us below:

When we receive your request we will try to contact the registered keeper of the car to see if they can silence the alarm within a reasonable time.

If the registered keeper cannot be traced, an abatement notice may be served under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, stating that if the alarm is not silenced - normally within an hour - the vehicle will be forcibly entered to disconnect the alarm or removed entirely.

The registered keeper of the vehicle will be informed and charged for all costs incurred.

House alarms

Try to find and speak with the person responsible for the property to explain how the situation is disturbing you.

If you can't find the person and feel that the alarm is having a significant impact on you, report the noise to us below:

Report a noise nuisance

Council officers will try to contact the owner of the property to establish if they are able to silence the alarm within a reasonable time period.

If the owner cannot be contacted, an abatement notice may be served under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

If the investigating officer is satisfied that the alarm is causing a statutory nuisance, formal action will be taken to silence the alarm.

This involves obtaining a warrant from the magistrates court to enter the premises, deactivate the alarm and leave the house secure.

The owner will be informed of the action taken and will be charged for all costs incurred.
