CCTV storage and access

Access to CCTV images

Access to the control room is restricted to:

  • Security Industry Authority Licensed CCTV Operators
  • senior management
  • investigative bodies
  • specialist contractors

Camera movements are strictly controlled and are limited by Human Rights and Data Protection legislation.

This includes setting up privacy zones where needed. These prevent staff from invading the privacy of residents in their own homes.

There is a single live monitor feed to Gwent Police HQ. A CCTV operator can display a camera image during an incident.

This function is not controlled externally. It is not used for retrospective viewing or playback.

Data retention period

Recorded CCTV data is kept for no longer than 30 days. After this it is automatically deleted.

Depending on the nature of the incident CCTV recordings considered relevant to an ongoing investigation may be retained for an extended period. If the requesting authority no longer needs them, or no correspondence is received within an additional 30 days, the data is deleted.

The council’s CCTV is fully compliant with:

  • Home Office Information Commissioners Office guidelines
  • Surveillance Commissioners code of practice
  • the General Data Protection Regulation (GPDR)
  • the Data Protection Act
