Elective home education
Elective home education is a term used when parents educate their child at home instead of in school.
In Wales and the rest of the UK, although education is compulsory, going to school is not.

Local authorities have no legal responsibility or obligation to fund parents who choose to home educate.
Parents who choose to educate their children at home must be prepared to provide and pay for books, all other materials and the cost of any public exams and course fees.
Welsh Government elective home education grant
The Welsh Government elective home education grant is available to families who educate at home to help with the costs of:
- GCSEs or alternative qualifications
- Welsh language courses for the family
- textbooks and other learning materials
- educational trips
- learning software
- facilities to use for group activities
Parents who home educate their child and are able to confirm that their child is not on the register of any school can apply for this grant.
