Catchment areas

You can apply for your child to be admitted to any school but children living within a primary or secondary school’s catchment area are given priority over children living outside the catchment area on application, although this does not guarantee a place at the school.

Every school in Newport serves a catchment area and every Newport address will fall within the catchment area of both an English-medium and a Welsh-medium school.

Your catchment school is not automatically your nearest school

Check your catchment before making an application for school as you may not be eligible for home to school transport assistance.

If you decide not to apply for your catchment school at all, this could increase the chances of your child not being allocated a place at a school of your choice.

In accordance with recent school reorganisation proposals the English Medium catchment areas of both Pillgwenlly and Maesglas Primary Schools will be changing with effect from September 2023.  These changes will be available to be viewed from 7th July 2022. Please check your catchment school prior to making an application.
