Empty homes

Empty properties 8 East Street

Information for owners

Information for developers

Newport needs more housing. If private homes are left empty there is more pressure for development on greenfield sites.

In order to identify the reasons why homes are left empty and help owners bring them back into occupation, the council introduced the Empty Homes Strategy. Through the strategy, we work with owners, partner agencies and local residents to minimise the impact of empty homes on the city and meet rising housing need.

Report concerns about an empty home

Homes that are left empty for a long time tend to deteriorate. Long-term empty homes can also cause problems for neighbours and the local community. An overgrown garden, post behind the door and a generally neglected appearance can attract vandalism or crime.

If issues arise, the council has statutory powers to act if there is a genuine need to do so. Normally the owner will be asked to remedy the problem first, unless it is an emergency.
