Newport Libraries' local studies collection in Central library has been collected over many years and contains materials of interest to historians and researchers.
The collection can be accessed by visiting the Reference library on the first floor and asking a member of staff.
Some items need to be requested in advance, please email reference.library@newport.gov.uk to check.
Maps and plans
Current and retrospective maps and plans are available for personal research, school projects and local history studies.
Historic maps - miscellaneous maps of the local region dating back to the 18th century
Tithe maps - large scale plans from the 1840s covering the whole of Monmouthshire and originally used for assessing tithe rent charges
Ordnance survey maps - Newport from the 1880s to 2005 and Monmouthshire 1886, 1901-02, 1920-21
Current - Ordnance survey maps and a large selection of road atlases, including limited worldwide coverage.
Newspapers and periodicals
The library takes daily copies of most broadsheet, tabloids and local newspapers.
Back issues are kept for either a week or a month dependant on title.
The local studies collection also has local newspapers dating back to the mid-19th century.

Local Studies collection
The Local Studies (Monmouthshire) collection comprises books, pamphlets, maps and illustrations relating to the old counties of Monmouthshire and Gwent, with special emphasis on Newport itself.
The collection has been in existence for over 100 years and grows as new material becomes available.
The collection includes a large catalogue of historic directories of Newport and Monmouthshire which are invaluable when tracing family homes and businesses.
