Stay home. Save lives. Celebrate VE Day

Victory in Europe Day (VE Day) celebrates the formal acceptance by the Allies of World War II of Nazi Germany's unconditional surrender of its armed forces on 8 May 1945.  This year marks 75 years since the guns fell silent at the end of the war in Europe.

Mark the anniversary of VE Day by holding a ‘stay at home’ commemoration with people in your household. The occasion will remember the contribution of British, Commonwealth and Allied armed forces personnel and those who contributed to the war effort and safeguarded the Home Front.

Get involved:

  • Decorate your windows with red, white and blue bunting.
  • Children can find out about VE Day and post their own red, white and blue artwork in their window or download our posters to colour and display to show your support (pdf).
  • Wear something red, white and blue or 1940s vintage dress and re-live the event through TV, radio and online broadcasts.
  • If you live alone, ring your friends or video call them to celebrate from the safety of your own home.

We would love it if you would share on Facebook and Twitter using the hashtags #VEDay75 and #StayinforGwent

You can also find other ways to participate by looking at the online resources from BBC Make a Difference and the Government's VE Day website

The Organisers of VE Day75 are also encouraging all those taking part to undertake the Nation’s Toast to the Heroes of WW2 at 3pm on 8 May.

From the safety of your own home people can stand up and raise a glass of refreshment of your choice and undertake the following toast:

To those who gave so much, we thank you.’

To mark VE Day we have asked our local veterans to let us know their thoughts on what the day means to them. Read more

We hope you are able to join in and recognise such an important occasion in our country’s history from the safety of your own home.
