Welsh Government Cost of Living Support

Welsh Government has announced that a £150 cost of living payment is to be made to all occupiers of properties that are in bands A, B, C and D, along with those that receive Council Tax Reduction (formerly known as council tax benefit), regardless of what band their property is in (A to I).

The £150 is not a rebate on the council tax bill, it is a payment to help with the rising cost of all utility bills.

Every household that qualifies will receive a payment, even if you don’t pay council tax because you receive council tax reduction.

There will be ONE payment per eligible household.

Empty properties and second homes are not eligible for a payment, only properties that were occupied on the 15th February 2022.

It looks like some council tax payers who are exempt from paying the tax (for example, a household made up entirely of care leavers up to the age of 25, or people with a severe mental impairment) will also be entitled to receive a payment although the exact details of this are yet to be confirmed.

You will receive the payment into your bank account, it cannot be deducted from your council tax bill.

How will I get my payment?

We have started making payments into direct debit payers bank accounts.

If you pay by direct debit you should see the payment in your account from Tuesday 3rd May onwards, please be aware that it might take a few days for the payment to be available.

There are some cases where we haven’t been able to pay the funds automatically:

  • Where the name on the bank account does not match the council tax records
  • The address registered with the bank does not match the council tax records
  • The bank account is new, usually set up in the last three months

If we haven’t been able to pay your cost of living payment for one of the above reasons we will be in touch to let you know how what you need to do to receive your payment.

If you do not pay your council tax by direct debit, you will need to complete the registration form below.

You will need information from your most recent council tax bill along with your bank account details for payment.

Please complete all parts of the form and ensure that you submit the form at the end of the process.

You will receive a confirmation email to say that the form has been received.

If you have already made an application, please do not make any further applications. Any duplicate applications will be declined and this will slow down the processing time.

We aim to make the payment within 30 days of the form being submitted, please do not contact us during this time.

If we require any additional information we will contact you from the email address costoflivingpayments@newport.gov.uk.

Please be mindful of telephone calls from people claiming to work for the Council, we will not ring you to ask for bank account details. Should you receive a call and want to check if it is genuine, please email the Cost of Living Team on costoflivingpayments@newport.gov.uk
