Service to raise the Commonwealth Flag of Peace held at Civic Centre

Posted on Monday 13th March 2023

Newport City Council today marked Commonwealth Day with a flag-raising service in the grounds of the Civic Centre.

The ceremony was led by Reverend Keith Beardmore with participation from Maindee primary school and Gwent Music.

A town crier delivered the commonwealth proclamation before the Commonwealth flag of peace was raised by Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Edward Watts MBE DL.

The ceremony also marked the tenth anniversary of the signing of the Commonwealth Charter by our late Queen Elizabeth II.

The Charter sets out the values and aspirations that unite the Commonwealth’s 56 independent countries in Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe and the Pacific and the 2.5 billion people who live there.

This is repeated by nations around the globe as member states reaffirm their commitment to democracy, development and respect for diversity.
