People across the country and the Commonwealth will be celebrating the Coronation of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort over a weekend of special events.

Coronation Big Lunches, street parties and a day dedicated to good causes will bring communities together.

The Coronation will take place on Saturday 6 May at Westminster Abbey and on Sunday 7 May a Coronation Concert will take place at Windsor Castle.

The weekend of celebrations will end with the Big Help Out on Monday 8 May  – a special Bank Holiday proclaimed by the Prime Minister in honour of the Coronation.

Councillor Jane Mudd, leader of the council, said: “We saw something very special last year when so many people across the city got into the jubilee spirit and came together to celebrate. It was amazing to see families, communities and organisations all having fun, and we would very much like to replicate that this year in celebration of the King’s coronation.

“I am pleased to announce that we will again be supporting street parties – not only are we here to help, we are also offering to cover some of the costs that can be associated with closing a road. Get those plans in place and submit your applications early!”

Street parties

In support of the Big Lunch on Sunday 7 May, Newport City Council will again be facilitating local street parties as we did for the Jubilee.

Guidance on how to safely plan a street party and if required, apply for a road closure, is available here.

Applications will be considered based on safety, suitability of the road and other closures in the area, but if approved, the council will cover the cost of appropriate traffic management measures for the closure (for example, essential signage and cones).

If a street party or road closure is not suitable in your area, there are also alternative ideas of how you can mark the occasion in your community.

The deadline for initial road closure applications is April 16, 2023. Following a review of applications received, a second application round may be announced.
