New chapter for council building

Posted on Monday 20th February 2023

Central Library, Museum and Art Gallery in John Frost Square will reopen to the public at the end of this month.

Some council services will also be operating from the building following a major programme of Welsh Government grant-funded works that have taken place over recent months.

Councillor Jane Mudd, Leader of Newport City Council, said: “Residents will be able to access a range of council services in a much more accessible venue in the heart of the city centre, close to the bus station and car parks.

“It makes much better use of a council-owned building and the work to accommodate extra services has included new rooms where meetings can be held with residents in comfortable and confidential surroundings.

“A much brighter and more welcoming foyer has been created. I’m also pleased that Urban Circle has won funding to create some unique artwork within the building and I look forward to seeing that taking shape over the coming weeks.”

Face-to-face teams from customer services, housing and appointeeships will be based in John Frost Square from Monday 27 February.

Check below for the usual operating days and times for each service. Customer services will initially be open on three days a week but with different opening times which will offer greater convenience for residents.

Other services will also use the building but on an appointment-only basis.

With the reopening of the library in John Frost Square on 28 February, the pop-up library in nearby Kingsway will close on Saturday 25 February.

Visitors to the much-loved library, museum and art gallery will find they still look familiar, but an improved local studies section has been created for those interested in local history and family trees.

The museum is also hosting a fantastic exhibition that documents Newport’s rich musical legacy over 40 years.

Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Winding Snake Productions has led a social history project that celebrates bands, gigs, and venues that sent generations of Newportonians into the night with their ears ringing.
