Volunteers sought to support disabled children's activities

Posted on Monday 14th March 2022

Buddies Together is a new volunteer group being set up to support disabled children and young people to take part in fun activities.

Newport City Council's disabled children's team runs a range of weekly and holiday activities for young people.

Trying new experiences in different social settings helps the children develop skills such as communication and independence while having fun.

Buddies Together is looking for volunteers over the age of 17 to join. They will be provided with training before being matched with a group or individual to support for two to four hours a week.

Councillor Paul Cockeram, the council's cabinet member for social services, said: "Giving just a few hours a week will not only help a young person have an enjoyable time, it will also be a rewarding and beneficial experience for the volunteer.

"As well as providing valuable support to disabled children and young people, the volunteers will get an understanding of what it means to support someone with a disability.

"This will also give them valuable skills they could use in future training or employment. Above all, the volunteers will be helping the children have fun and making a real difference to all their lives."

Volunteering with Buddies Together could be an ideal opportunity for students completing Welsh Baccalaureate or college/university, particularly those wanting to go into social work or nursing.
