Commonwealth flag raising service at Civic Centre

Posted on Monday 14th March 2022

Newport City Council today marked Commonwealth Day with a flag-raising service in the grounds of the Civic Centre.

The ceremony was led by Reverend Keith Beardmore and the Mayor, Councillor David Williams read a personal message from the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations, the Right Honourable Patricia Scotland, QC.

Brigadier Robert Aitken CBE, the Lord Lieutenant of Gwent, read the Commonwealth Affirmation before the raising of the Commonwealth flag.

This is repeated by nations around the globe as member states reaffirm their commitment to democracy, development and respect for diversity.

This year's theme centres around the forthcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting - Delivering a Common Future - which highlights how the 54 member countries are innovating, connecting and transforming to help achieve goals like fighting climate change, promoting good governance and boosting trade.

As 2022 is Her Majesty's Jubilee Year, there will also be a special focus on the role service plays in the lives of people and communities across the Commonwealth.
