Newport City Council has committed £100,000 of funding to support local organisations that are helping people affected by food poverty.

Councillor Jane Mudd, Leader of the council, said: “We know that families and individuals across Newport continue to feel considerable pressure after a very challenging two years, and the post-Christmas period can be particularly difficult.

“Our local food banks provide such an important service – providing essential supplies to those struggling to cover the most basic needs.

“We know demand is very high and we want to put money into services that are in the heart of our communities, making a real difference.”

The funding will be used to help community food initiatives meet increased demand or difficulties sourcing sufficient donations. It could be used to purchase additional supplies of good quality food and essential goods; support the effective operation of community food organisations, for example overhead costs and volunteer expenses; or to purchase new equipment/storage facilities and cooking equipment

Applications for this funding are now open. Details and an application form are available here.
