Councillor Jane Mudd, Leader of Newport City Council, said: “First and foremost, our priority is the safety of our residents and staff.

“This has been described as an ‘historic event’ and is potentially the most severe storm for 30 years. I urge residents to stay at home when Storm Eunice hit tomorrow unless it is absolutely essential and please be careful if you do have to go out.

“For this reason, we are suspending some services and closing some of our buildings. This is not a decision that is taken lightly.

“We have also strongly advised that residents of Lighthouse Park temporarily leave their homes. The estate is particularly vulnerable given its position close to the coast. Together with the emergency services and our partners, we are supporting them

“Some of our staff will still have to go out to do their job including our city services teams who are on 24-hour standby to deal with emergencies. I would like to thank them and all those who will have to leave their homes tomorrow to make sure others are safe and deliver essential services.”

Services affected tomorrow:

  • All schools are closed to pupils and staff
  • Parks and cemeteries closed
  • Waste and recycling collections suspended
  • Household Waste Recycling Centre, Usk Way, closed
  • Libraries, community centres and neighbourhood hubs closed
  • Mansion House closed
  • Calls can be made to social services as normal and staff will respond to urgent and emergency calls
  • Council face-to-face services in The Riverfront will be closed

The Caerleon flood barrier has now been lifted and Caerleon Road has reopened.

Please contact the council by phone only if it is absolutely essential as contact centre staff will be dealing with issues caused by Storm Eunice and assisting other services. For online services visit www.newport.gov.uk or email [email protected]
