Old Bassaleg Bridge update: 10 August

Posted on Tuesday 10th August 2021

Old Bassaleg Bridge remains closed to vehicles and pedestrians for safety reasons.

On Friday, structural experts warned that the bridge should be closed immediately.

Residents in Forge Mews were strongly advised to leave their homes as emergency vehicles could not reach the properties.

The council offered to provide temporary accommodation for those unable to stay with family or friends. To date, two households have requested that option and both are happy with the placement provided.

Daily welfare checks are being made to all residents and, wherever possible, the council is doing all it can to ensure affected residents are supported until  temporary access arrangements are put in place.

Newport City Council is urgently working on a solution to the immediate issue of vehicular access to properties as well as a long-term solution

Initial work to clear the temporary access was completed on the weekend and deliveries of supplies and equipment are expected today to continue with the work required to create a safe access and egress onto the A467.

This is being done as quickly as possible and it is hoped it will be completed by the end of this week and available for residents to use. Those who have left their homes will then be able to return as emergency vehicles will again be able to reach their properties if necessary.

Remedial work will commence on Old Bassaleg Bridge as soon as possible and it will remain closed until it is made safe.
