Helping hand for small businesses

Posted on Friday 30th August 2019

New or existing small businesses can apply for grants from Newport City Council's business development fund.

The fund, created in 2015/16, has had a positive impact on the economy and last year supported the opening or expansion of a number of diverse, independent businesses.

As well as helping new and expanding businesses, it has also contributed to the provision of advice, support and training.

This year £60,000 was set aside to assist businesses with a particular focus on the city centre.

Councillor Jane Mudd, cabinet member for regeneration and housing, said; "I'm delighted that we are giving financial support to new and growing businesses in Newport. We have already helped some fantastic, independent ventures and I look forward to seeing more enterprises taking off this year with our assistance."

Businesses can apply for grants to a maximum of £3,000 in the city centre and to £1,500 for the rest of the city.

Funding can be used towards the rent for new, larger or additional floor space; plant and equipment; ICT equipment; non-statutory training or professional fees. It must be linked to the creation of at least one full-time job.
