Index and information service

The 1989 Children Act requires local authorities to keep a register of disabled children within their area.

In Newport this register is called the Index and is used to help plan services and provide information to parents of children with a disability, that is, any child or young person aged 0 - 17 years who needs additional support from services because of:

  • Learning disability
  • Physical disability
  • Deaf or hearing impairment
  • Blind or partially sighted
  • Speech or language impairment
  • Chronic, life threatening or serious illness
  • Other disability

Children and their parents can choose whether or not to be included on the Index.

The Index does not allow access to more services and does not count as a referral for services.

It is not linked to any other register and personal information is confidential.
